Def Leppard Announces First Authorized Documentary for Early 2027 Theatrical Release

Def Leppard has announced Long Live Def Leppard, the band's first authorized full-length documentary, with Bleecker Street's Crosswalk division setting a North American theatrical release for early 2027. Director Jeff Feuerzeig, known for The Devil and Daniel Johnston and Author: The JT LeRoy Story, will helm the project. The film will include never-before-seen footage and what the band's press release calls unparalleled access to its members.

Long Live Def Leppard will trace the group's arc from Sheffield, England schoolmates to Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees. The documentary will feature new interviews with all five current longtime members: singer Joe Elliott, guitarists Phil Collen and Vivian Campbell, drummer Rick Allen, and bassist Rick Savage. Together they will share the stories behind the group known for hits including Pour Some Sugar on Me.

Feuerzeig described his personal connection to the band in a statement accompanying the announcement. He recalled first reading about Def Leppard in Creem magazine and then seeing the not-yet-famous band open for Ozzy Osbourne on Osbourne's first Blizzard of Ozz tour at Asbury Park's Convention Hall in the summer of 1981. The experience left a lasting impression that he said made him a fan for life.

The director characterized the band members as young lads from working-class Sheffield who were punching far above their weight and playing for keeps. He called it an honor to collaborate with the group and bring what he described as their unique, heartwarming, and often humorous underdog story to the screen. Feuerzeig emphasized that the documentary is not a typical sex, drugs, and rock and roll tale.

Crosswalk provided a synopsis that frames the documentary around the band's origins and the adversity that shaped its trajectory. The distributor described Def Leppard's story as one of an unbreakable brotherhood born out of working-class Sheffield.
