Universal Music Group (UMG) and AI audio specialist ElevenLabs are developing a joint AI platform that will enable fans to create remixes and mashups from songs by participating artists.

This multi-year licensing agreement represents ElevenLabs' inaugural deal with a major music company, as announced by both parties on Thursday.

The platform, currently under development, will allow fans to access UMG's catalog to generate new interpretations of individual tracks and "personalized vocal experiences." The exact nature of these vocal experiences remains unspecified.

The new platform will operate exclusively with music from artists who actively choose to participate, ensuring a consent-based model.

It will remain distinct from ElevenLabs' existing offerings, which include a music API for developers and the ElevenMusic app for creating original songs.

ElevenLabs CEO Mati Staniszewski stated that the collaboration aims to empower artists and songwriters to craft novel fan experiences while ensuring fair compensation, leveraging UMG's community and rights management expertise with ElevenLabs' AI models.

The companies have not disclosed specific details regarding how revenues will be distributed among the platform, the label, and the artists.

This partnership extends Universal Music's ongoing engagement with AI technologies. The label previously settled a copyright infringement lawsuit with AI platform Udio in October 2025, subsequently opening its catalog for Udio's training.

UMG also holds AI licensing agreements with other industry players, including Spotify, Nvidia, and Klay.

ElevenLabs has faced its own legal challenges; in August 2025, it settled a lawsuit with two voice actors over unauthorized voice cloning. A class-action lawsuit by journalists and voice actors concerning alleged non-consensual voice profile creation remains ongoing, as reported by Music Business Worldwide.

This collaboration highlights the music industry's evolving approach to AI, balancing innovation with artist rights and compensation.

The platform's launch date and the full scope of its "personalized vocal experiences" are key details to monitor as development progresses.
