The deal follows a period of legal battles, indicating a shift from litigation to strategic collaboration in the AI music sector.

Universal Music Group (UMG) announced a multi-year strategic partnership with AI voice technology firm ElevenLabs on September 10. This collaboration includes a licensing agreement and a broader strategic initiative to develop a new AI-powered music platform, allowing fans to create music featuring participating artists.

This marks ElevenLabs' inaugural deal with a major record label. The announcement emphasizes "responsible AI" and a commitment to artists receiving a share of "the value created." This development occurs two years after UMG initiated lawsuits against various AI music startups.

UMG's engagement with AI firms extends beyond ElevenLabs. In October 2025, UMG settled a copyright dispute with Udio, an AI music generation platform. This settlement led to new licensing agreements for recordings and publishing, compensation terms, and plans for a licensed Udio subscription service launch in 2026, with UMG gaining an ownership stake in Udio.

Following the UMG-ElevenLabs announcement, Suno also secured similar agreements with Warner Music, BMG, and Believe. These three major label deals with separate AI firms materialized within 48 hours, highlighting a rapid industry shift.

Sir Lucian Grainge, UMG's Chairman and CEO, stated in the press release that the partnership aims to center artists, songwriters, and fans. However, the deal structure places UMG's music catalog, licensing terms, and control over artist participation at its core.

For fans, the platform offers a remixing utility. Artists are promised compensation, though specific figures were not disclosed in the initial press release.

This trend reflects a broader industry strategy where major labels, after asserting legal leverage over AI technology, are now converting that leverage into ownership stakes and licensing agreements. The initial lawsuits served as a means to establish the "cost of admission" for AI companies.

AI music startups, including ElevenLabs and Suno, have actively sought these partnerships. Operating with training data without proper licenses posed a significant risk of legal action, making these deals crucial for their business continuity and legitimacy.

The rapid succession of these agreements suggests that AI startups are in a race to secure licenses, transforming potential lawsuits from negotiating tools into existential threats. This dynamic indicates a strategic victory for major labels in shaping the future of AI music.
